Sydney Sweeney is addressing the controversy, and no, it is not about her American Eagle jeans ad. Sweeney has commented on another headline-making campaign from earlier this year.
The Euphoria actress told The Wall Street Journal that she remembered the social media frenzy around her bathwater-infused, limited-edition soap collaboration with men’s personal hygiene brand Dr. Squatch, which sold out in seconds.
Sweeney said she doesn’t give too much attention to online chatter, but she believes “it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience.”
She noted that “mainly the girls” commented on her bathwater soap collaboration, which she found “really interesting.” Sweeney added, “They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater,” referencing the viral risqué scene in Elordi’s 2023 film Saltburn.
She and Dr. Squatch called the limited-edition soap Sydney’s Bathwater Bliss.

Great Genes or Jeans?
Sweeney then made headlines again for her jeans ad with American Eagle. In the clip, she said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.” Social media users accused the ad of promoting eugenics or nodding to Nazi propaganda.
The controversy spread quickly online, and the likes of President Donald Trump weighed in. Trump praised the ad, but only after it was reported that Sweeney had registered with the GOP in Florida last June.
American Eagle later issued a statement defending the campaign: “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Controversy or not, Sydney Sweeney also launched her lingerie brand as she has business ties to people within Bezos’s orbit. This led to her unexpected appearance at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s wedding.
