Jessica Simpson showed off a brand-new look at the American Idol Season 23 finale on May 18. The 43-year-old singer traded in her signature blonde for a warmer, dirtier shade. Her new hair color featured sunkissed highlights and a soft, natural finish.
Simpson turned to her longtime colorist, Rita Hazan, for the transformation. Hazan described the shade as “desert sunset blonde.” The process took two hours to complete. Hazan said the new look feels more youthful and natural—like a beachy glow.
To achieve the finish, Hazan used Glaze’s Supergloss in the Vanilla Lights shade. It toned down brassiness and added shine. The gloss left Simpson’s hair looking smoother and healthier. According to Hazan, the singer loved the result and was excited about the change.
Hazan also shared that Simpson wanted something different this time. She usually sticks to a buttery blonde, but they chose something fresher. The updated color reflects her new phase of life following her split from Eric Johnson earlier this year. The former couple shares three children—Maxwell, Birdie Mae, and Ace Knute.

The hair makeover symbolizes a shift for Simpson. Hazan called it fun, confident, and full of attitude. The two have worked together for years and share a close friendship. Hazan often flies from New York to Los Angeles just for Simpson’s appointments. Their sessions usually turn into lively catch-ups, full of laughter and stories.
Simpson has embraced change in more ways than just her hair. Last month, she released her new EP, Nashville Canyon. She also launched a fresh Walmart collection for her Jessica Simpson brand. The designs reflect her Southern roots and evolving personal style.

In a recent interview, Simpson said her fashion changes with each life phase. She doesn’t follow rules when it comes to style. Her inspiration comes from everyday moments—movies, vintage prints, and even Pinterest.
She’s also made bold style choices lately. In March, she posted a TikTok from the Austin airport in a faux shearling coat over a leopard jumpsuit and latex boots. The coat, from Maison Common, quickly sold out.
That same month, Simpson performed at the Luck Reunion festival in Texas. She wore a leopard-print dress, layers of turquoise jewelry, and a crochet lace bolero. It was one of her first public performances in years—and another example of her fearless approach to fashion and reinvention.
