Elden Ring fans rejoice! A live-action adaptation of the acclaimed video game is officially in development, with Ex Machina director Alex Garland at the helm. To add to the excitement, Elden Ring lore co-author George R.R. Martin is set to co-produce.
Hidetaka Miyazaki directed the development of the game, which FromSoftware released in 2022. The action RPG has earned acclaim for its expansive open-world design and intricate storytelling. Players assume the role of a Tarnished, journeying through the Lands Between to restore the shattered Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord.

The game has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has received numerous Game of the Year awards. In 2024, FromSoftware released an expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. FromSoftware will release the multiplayer-focused spinoff Elden Ring: Nightreign next week on May 30.
FromSoftware first suggested the possibility of expanding Elden Ring beyond video games in 2022. In 2024, George R.R. Martin, creator of A Song of Ice and Fire confirmed the buzz, saying, “There is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.”
Who is Alex Garland?
Known for films like Annihilation and Civil War, Garland will both write and direct the project. A24 is producing the film in collaboration with Bandai Namco Entertainment. The film’s production team also includes Vince Gerardis, co-producer of Game of Thrones.
Although the filmmakers have not yet disclosed specific details about the cast or release date, Alex Garland signals a deep, atmospheric approach to adapting the game’s rich and complex world. This project also marks Garland’s return to video game narratives, following his previous work co-writing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.
Garland co-directed his most recent movie, Warfare, which premiered in April and achieved both critical and commercial success.
