Dakota Johnson is opening up about her surprising friendship with the Material Girl – Madonna. The actress addressed her appearance in an Instagram post shared by Madonna last month.

The photos showed Johnson resting her head on the pop icon’s shoulder as they posed with Madonna’s talent manager, Guy Oseary, and comedian Dave Chappelle at a party.

“I really love her. We’ve been like weird friends for a while,” Johnson said. “I met her when I was really young because she did a movie with my stepfather, and then I got to know her later because we were going to work together on something.”

The Connection

Madonna, best known as the “Queen of Pop”, also acted in films such as Evita alongside Antonio Banderas. At the time, Banderas was married to Johnson’s mother, Melanie Griffith, from 1996 to 2014. Johnson’s father is Don Johnson, Griffith’s husband before she married Banderas.

Though Johnson didn’t reveal which project she and Madonna once discussed, fans recently heard Madonna’s song Material Girl in the first trailer for Johnson’s other summer film, the romantic drama Materialists. Madonna last acted in 2006 with a voice role in Arthur and the Invisibles and later co-wrote and directed W.E. in 2011. She is currently producing a long-awaited biopic of her life, with Julia Garner attached to star.

“We’ve always kind of circled each other, but she is an energy to be near that is so beautiful and so wild. It’s just cool that she even wants to talk to me,” said Johnson.

Meanwhile, Johnson will appear in the upcoming film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s Verity in 2026. She also revealed at Cannes this May that she plans to make her feature directorial debut with a film written by her Cha Cha Real Smooth co-star Vanessa Burghardt.

Johnson’s newest film, Splitsville, premiered in limited theaters on Aug. 22. Speaking of Splitsville, the 50 Shades actress did split with Chris Martin as she was “tired of him dragging his feet” over marriage.
