Mariah Carey provided a hilariously bizarre reason why she doesn’t believe in celebrating birthdays. While chatting with UK radio station Capital FM’s co-hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North, and Chris Stark, the All I Want for Christmas Is You singer answered a series of questions about her preferences, including her views on time and whether she acknowledges it at all.
North asked the 56-year-old singer, “Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?”
“That is true,” Carey candidly confirmed.
When Welby asked what she meant by that, Carey simply replied, “I just don’t believe in it.”
The hosts were left confused, and Stark wanted to know if she was referring to time zones, but Carey said, “No, just time,” she added.
The hosts wanted to clarify. Welby then asked, “So no clocks? Just not into that?” To which Carey replied nonchalantly, “Yeah. No, just let it go.”
Welby pressed further and asked, “Do you celebrate your birthday?”
“I don’t have a birthday, no,” said the singer. “Anniversaries, yes.”
Mariah Carey believes in celebrating life
This isn’t the first time Mariah Carey has shared her unconventional views on time. The pop icon has long rejected the idea of aging in the traditional sense.
In 2014, she told Out Magazine, “I’m eternally 12 years old. I don’t count years, but I definitely rebuke them. I have anniversaries, not birthdays, because I celebrate life, darling.”
Two years later, in a separate interview with People, the singer said, “I think I have to remain eternally oblivious to age. Honestly, when you put a number on it yourself, it’s just like, why? Why do that?”
50th Career Hit
In related news, Carey has officially scored her 50th career hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Her new single Type Dangerous debuted at No. 95 on the chart dated June 21, 2025. Co-written and co-produced by Carey, the track offers a glimpse of her upcoming 16th studio album – her first full-length release since Caution in 2018.
The song’s official music video premiered on Saturday, June 14.
