Tom Bateman will star opposite Lili Reinhart in the upcoming film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s best-selling romance novel, The Love Hypothesis. The novel originally began as a piece of Star Wars fan fiction titled Head Over Feet, as the story reimagined Rey and Kylo Ren (nicknamed “Reylo” by fans) as academic rivals-turned-lovers.
Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley famously portrayed the characters, and in a real-life twist, Ridley is married to Bateman. Ridley acknowledged the connection on Instagram in her stories.

Reinhart will play Olive, a third-year Ph.D. student who fakes a relationship with young, brooding professor Adam (Bateman) to convince her best friend that she’s capable of commitment. The twist? Olive and Adam can’t stand each other – at first. But as the fake dating experiment heats up, so do real feelings. Reinhart is also a producer of the film.
Over The Moon
The author, Hazelwood, celebrated the adaptation news in a statement: “Honestly, I still can’t believe this is happening. Elizabeth Cantillon, Claire Scanlon, and Lili Reinhart have all created, produced, or starred in works I’m absolutely feral about. I trust this team completely and can’t wait to see what they create.”
The Love Hypothesis was published in 2021 by Berkley (Penguin Random House) and spent 10 months on the New York Times best-seller list. The book became a global hit, selling rights in 40 countries and being named Amazon’s Best Romance of the Year.
“To write a book is so impressive,” she said. “Let alone a New York Times bestseller. And to think it was inspired by something I was a part of? That’s very thrilling. So thank you, whoever wrote The Love Hypothesis and The Hurricane Wars. Wow.”
Ridley and Bateman met on the set of Murder on the Orient Express in 2017 and quietly tied the knot in 2023.
