HBO has officially released the first teaser for Welcome to Derry, a new horror series set in the world of Stephen King’s IT. The nine-episode show is set to premiere this fall. It will act as a prequel to the recent IT films and expand on the terrifying lore of Derry, Maine.
Bill Skarsgård returns as Pennywise the Clown. The show is described as a continuation of Andy Muschietti’s IT movies. However, the storyline will introduce brand-new events inspired by King’s novel. The series begins in 1962 and explores the chilling buildup to the events of IT: Chapter One (2017).
The plot is largely based on Mike Hanlon’s interludes in King’s book. These interludes describe tragic and violent incidents in Derry’s history. Muschietti has hinted that future seasons—if HBO approves them—would take viewers even further back. Season 2 could explore 1935, while Season 3 may focus on 1908.
Andy Muschietti will direct several episodes. He is also an executive producer alongside Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, Bill Skarsgård, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin. The series is a joint project from HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
Fuchs wrote the teleplay for the first episode. He will serve as co-showrunner with Kane. Together, they aim to explore the roots of evil that haunt Derry.
Welcome to Derry promises more than just jump scares. It aims to expand the mythology of Pennywise and the town’s cursed past. For fans of King’s work and horror lovers alike, the return to Derry brings with it both nostalgia and new nightmares. The countdown to fall has officially begun.
