Squid Game creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, says if a US remake of the hit Netflix series ever happens, he would cast a major Hollywood star as the lead. Viewers spotted the clue on Vanity Fair’s YouTube channel, where Hwang joined the show’s cast for a playful quiz game about each other.
At one point, Hwang asked who he’d choose to play the lead in an American version of Squid Game. Korean star Lee Byung-hun jokingly suggested Adam Sandler, but young Yim Si-wan correctly guessed DiCaprio.
“We had a lot of rumors about him – whether he’d make a cameo and such,” Hwang said, referring to long-running fan speculation about DiCaprio’s potential involvement in the series.
Yim asked whether DiCaprio would fit better as the enigmatic Front Man or as a player, and Hwang responded, “If he were to do it, I think he’d be great as a player. Lately, he’s gotten really good at playing ‘loser’ roles like Gi-hun’s.”
Squid Game US?
The finale of Squid Game 3 dropped a final twist as Cate Blanchett unexpectedly walked onto the screen. This was a clue as Blanchett could be a Los Angeles recruiter for an American version of the deadly Squid Games.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk addressed rumors that a spinoff titled Squid Game: America would begin filming in December, with David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) reportedly set to direct. Hwang denied the reports but added that he would seriously consider the project if officially asked.
Since its 2021 debut, Squid Game has become a global sensation, winning multiple Emmy Awards and widespread critical acclaim. DiCaprio, a longtime fan of international cinema, previously praised the series after attending a Netflix event, further fueling hopes of a future collaboration.
Spinoff or not, it’s time to remind the readers about the Squid Game reality show titled Squid Game: The Challenge, where contestants mulled legal action due to an allegedly rigged and inhumane environment. After the show concluded, winner Mai Whelan complained that the producers hadn’t paid her a cent of her $4.56 million cash prize. So, be careful what you wish for.
