Popular YouTuber MrBeast is facing backlash for filming at several of Mexico’s most significant archaeological sites. In a video titled “I Explored 2000 Year Old Temples,” MrBeast showcases visits to ancient sites like Chichén Itzá, Calakmul, and Balamcanché. Some of the sites are typically closed to the public.

In the video, MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, and his team climb on pyramids and explore hidden tunnels in the southern states of Campeche and Yucatan. Several guides, including one identified only as Arthur, who wears an INAH vest, escort them through the pyramids.

“I can’t believe the government is letting us do this,” MrBeast says at one point in the video

The National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) stated that it formally authorized the visit and filming after local governments and Mexico’s Federal Ministry of Tourism submitted the requests.

The agreement explicitly prohibited monetization and commercial advertising. However, the video includes promotions for brands such as Feastables and Jack Link’s. It also offers a $500,000 giveaway to new subscribers. These actions are deemed as violations of the permit terms by INAH.

INAH also accuses the production of presenting misleading content, including claims of drone flights inside El Castillo at Chichén Itzá. It also includes overnight stays within archaeological zones among the misdemeanors. The institute is demanding a public retraction and compensation, asserting that the video commercializes and misrepresents Mexico’s cultural heritage.

As of now, neither MrBeast nor Full Circle Media has publicly responded to the allegations.
