Rapper Tory Lanez was seriously injured in a violent prison attack. The atrack left him with 14 stab wounds, according to a statement from his team posted to his Instagram on May 12, 2025. The injuries were extensive. It affected multiple areas of his body, including his back, torso, head, and face.
Lanez sustained damage so severe that both of his lungs collapsed, and he had to be placed on a ventilator. His condition has since improved, and he is now able to breathe without medical assistance. Despite the pain, his team said he is alert, speaking normally, and maintaining a positive attitude.
He has expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal and thanked supporters for their prayers. The rapper, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence. This is because he was reportedly involved with the 2020 shooting of fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.
Tory Lanez Prison Incident Under Investigation
The attack took place early in the morning on May 12, 2025. The site of the attack is said to be the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where Lanez is incarcerated. Reports indicate the stabbing happened in the prison yard. It also involved another inmate whose identity has not been made public.
A spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation confirmed the incident and said it occurred around 7:20 a.m. Staff at the facility responded quickly, providing emergency care and calling for medical assistance. Lanez was then taken to an outside hospital for additional treatment. Authorities have not determined the motive behind the attack, and the case remains under investigation.

Lanez was convicted in 2023 on three felony charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm. The charges stemmed from a shooting incident involving rapper Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete. During the trial, Pete testified that the two were leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood residence when they began arguing in a car.

The dispute reportedly centered on their previous romantic involvement and professional jealousy. She said she tried to leave the vehicle, and Lanez allegedly began firing at the ground, telling her to dance. She was struck by bullet fragments and later needed surgery to remove them.
Throughout the trial and sentencing, Lanez maintained his innocence and did not issue an apology. His conviction sparked widespread debate within the hip-hop community. Some high-profile artists, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, publicly supported him and even appealed to the court for a lighter sentence.
Before his incarceration, Lanez had achieved significant success. He had seven U.S. top 10 albums in as many years. He has recently hinted at releasing a new project from behind bars, titled Peterson.
