Nintendo has finally clarified Mario and Princess Peach’s relationship status – and it’s bound to send the manosphere into a meltdown. Let’s be real: Mario clearly has feelings for Princess Peach. The guy has spent decades battling Bowser, jumping through lava pits, and chasing down magical stars just to save her. He’s either head-over-heels in love or really in need of a new hobby.
Well, Nintendo may have just given us a clue as to why Peach hasn’t exactly been swooning over him. Turns out, their relationship isn’t what most fans assumed.
As first spotted by Dexerto’s Brad Norton (via @KirPinkFury on Twitter), Nintendo decided to stir things up last night by officially stating – via the Nintendo Today app – that Mario and Peach are just “good friends.”
Internet Explodes
Naturally, the internet exploded. Whether you’re a blue-check Twitter keyboard warrior or the final boss of Bluesky, fans across platforms can’t wrap their heads around Nintendo’s refusal to confirm the most obvious couple in gaming history.
“Damn, a whole generation psyopped into the friend zone”, wrote one user.
Some are even comparing it to the Link-Zelda situation. Despite appearing to live together in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Link and Zelda also seem to be stuck in some sort of eternal maybe-relationship limbo.
“What’s a little 30 years of longing and physical intimacy between friends,” wrote one fan in response while another called it the “most famous situationship in media”.
Maybe Nintendo’s just trying to keep things interesting. Let’s be honest – the “will-they-won’t-they” trope does way better with audiences than an actual relationship ever could. But at some point, even Mario has to take the hint.
Sorry, Mario. It’s-a not me, it’s-a you.
