Joe Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks alive, but is he one of the best fossil nerds around? The Netflix’s Quarterback series revealed a fact about the Cincinnati Bengals’ superstar: Burrow loves fossils.
In a practice segment from the series, Burrow animatedly shares his fossil obsession with Bengals coaches, trying to charm them with his prehistoric trivia.
“Somehow there’s this one fossil that proved Darwin’s theory of evolution,” Burrow said. “It’s called the Archaeopteryx. There are like 12 of them in the world. We saw one and the little old lady who works on it. Grinding.”
Yes, apparently, there’s an elderly museum researcher who spends her days hunched over one of the rarest fossils on Earth. Not a bad gig.
“They took us behind the scenes and showed us some incredible stuff,” Burrow said. “It was like a fossil library no one else gets to see. Like when a shoe store says, ‘Maybe we’ve got it in the back’ – but it’s all fossils. Super cool. And the field guy who finds them? He talked to us too. It was awesome.”
Creating a Buzz
Burrow, who led Cincinnati to the Super Bowl in 2021, is looking to bounce back after an injury-riddled 2023 season. Despite a valiant effort, he finished with 4,918 passing yards, 43 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, but the Bengals missed the playoffs with a 9-8 record.
“Why were fossils on my mind?” Burrow mused. “I don’t know. Because they’re cool. When aren’t fossils on your mind? They go back millions of years. That’s sick.”
The playful moment quickly went viral, offering fans a fun look at one of the NFL’s fiercest competitors.
With Burrow’s fossil fascination going viral and his comeback story generating buzz, Quarterback Season 2 is set to be one of Netflix’s must-watch sports documentaries of the year, offering football fans a rare, intimate look at life beyond the football field.
