After 27 years of marriage, James Brolin vividly remembers every detail of the blind date that led him to fall in love with his wife, Barbra Streisand.
In a recent interview with People, the actor recalled how their romance began on July 1, 1996. “Someone called and asked if I’d be interested in a date with her,” Brolin said. “I replied, ‘I like what she says between songs,’ and I was a real nut for women singers – jazz, bar singers, romantic singers. So that caught my interest.”
Brolin had been divorced for three years at that time. “I kept telling myself, ‘Who needs that again?’” he admitted. But both he and Streisand, 83, decided to go – even though they nearly backed out. “Halfway there, we both picked up the phone to cancel,” he said. “But something told us, ‘No. Let’s just do it.'”
When Brolin arrived at the restaurant, he didn’t look like the man Streisand expected. “She had seen me with a beard and curly hair for years on Hotel, but I had just cut it all off,” he recalled. “She looked at me and thought, ‘That’s not the guy I came to see.’ Then she walked behind me at the table and said, ‘Who f***ed up your hair?’”
“That’s when I fell in love,” Brolin said, laughing. “She told the truth right from the start. I was crazy about her. We’ve been together ever since.”
Anniversary
Brolin married the love of his life in 1998. He said Streisand has always been “very giving” throughout their marriage.
“I love her choices. People argue with her, but eventually they see she was right all along,” he said.
Their differences, Brolin said, are part of what makes their bond so strong. “She’s a perfectionist who takes her time. I’m a quick decision-maker and problem solver. We don’t work the same way, but we admire how the other one works – and that’s why it works.”
Streisand had previously been married to actor Elliott Gould from 1963 to 1971. Brolin had two previous marriages – to Jane Cameron Agee and later to Jan Smithers.
