Dakota Johnson describes Hollywood as “a bit of a mess” and criticized studios for repeatedly remaking “the same things”. The actress recently appeared on Hot Ones, the talk show where celebrity guests answer questions while attempting to complete rounds of chicken wings coated in spicy hot sauce.
The host, Sean Evans, asked her why she feels “Hollywood is so risk-averse,” having observed the industry “up close and personal”.

“I think it’s hard when creative decisions are made by committee, and it’s hard when creative decisions are made by people who don’t even really watch movies or know anything about them, and that tends to be what’s occurring a lot,” Johnson said.
Unoriginal Hollywood
Hollywood is in the midst of a major creative crisis . The general trend among studios toward producing sequels, remakes, or spin-offs has led to fewer and fewer original ideas. In fact, the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2024 followed this trend.
Johnson, who, admitted that Hollywood finds itself in a vicious cycle. “When something is doing well, the studios want it to continue that way, so they remake the same thing , but people don’t want that.” said the actress who knows the industry from the inside. “They want something new, they want to feel new things, experience new things, see new things, so I don’t know, I guess everything is a bit chaotic right now, right?” she added.
The actress also joked about the failure of her superhero movie Madame Web.
However, box office numbers don’t tell the whole story. Major studios rely on built-in audiences and keep producing remakes, sequels, revivals, and spin-offs with the confidence that they’ll perform well. This dependence on familiar intellectual property reflects a broader decline in originality – innovative and successful projects like The Sinners have become increasingly rare in today’s Hollywood.
