Bella Ramsey addressed the vocal online critics of The Last of Us Season 2. HBO’s hit adaptation of the video game aired earlier this year and now heads into the Emmys with several nominations.
Ramsey, who plays Ellie, offered blunt advice to detractors: “You don’t have to watch it. If you hate it that much, the game exists. You can just play the game again. If you do want to watch it, hope you enjoy it.”
Ramsey said they avoided most of the negativity while speaking on The Awardist podcast. “I tried to steer clear as much as I could because there’s nothing I can do about it anyway. The show is out. There’s nothing that can be changed or altered,” she said.
“So I’m like, there’s not really any point in reading or looking at anything. People are, of course, entitled to their opinions. But it doesn’t affect the show … they’re very separate things to me. So no, I just don’t really engage,” she continued.

The Last of Us 2
Season 2 adapted The Last of Us Part II and, like the video game, faced backlash over Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) brutal murder at the hands of new antagonist Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) and the depiction of Ellie’s romance with Dina (Isabela Merced). Online trolls review-bombed the series and flooded social media with homophobic comments.
Like the first half of the video game, Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger with Ellie ambushed by Abby. Season 3 will pick up that storyline with Dever’s Abby stepping into the lead role.
At a recent Emmys FYC event, showrunner Craig Mazin confirmed: “I can’t believe that they let us structure the series in this way … we just ended Season 2, and Season 3 is going to be starring – spoiler alert – Kaitlyn.”
HBO TV chief Casey Bloys has also suggested that The Last of Us could wrap up its story with either two more seasons or “one long season.”
Ramsey, Pascal, and the series itself are all nominated at next month’s Emmy Awards, with Ramsey competing for best lead actress in a drama
