Christine Baranski has something to say about the Blue Origin space mission. The actress criticized Lauren Sanchez and Katy Perry’s trip to space during the ATX TV Festival panel event.
The discussion tied into the theme of exploration of wealth disparities, like the TV show, The Gilded Age. Baranski hoped that the HBO series continues, noting there’s “so much to explore in terms of corruption and the buying of government influence, which is happening now.”
She then shifted gears, adding, “And the grotesque displays of wealth? Sending women into a spaceship for what? So they can do their makeup? What the f**k?”
Slipping into the voice of her character, Agnes van Rhijn, she quipped, “Don’t get me started. I’m going to sound like Agnes.”
Blue Origin
Katy Perry, Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn made the 11-minute voyage to the edge of space on April 14.
Baranski joined other celebrities who have voiced similar disapproval. Olivia Munn pointed out that “a lot of resources” went into the event. “Space exploration was to further our knowledge and to help mankind. What are they gonna do up there that makes life better for us down here?”
Emily Ratajkowski took to TikTok, calling the mission “beyond parody” and saying, “This is end-time s***”
Amy Schumer, Meg Stalter, and even Wendy’s joined in mocking or criticizing the trip. Jessica Chastain shared a Guardian op-ed titled, The Blue Origin flight showcased the utter defeat of American feminism.
Katy Perry said that she felt like a “human piñata” while addressing the intense online criticism following her participation in the spaceflight. Her ex, Orlando Bloom, reportedly disapproved of her decision to join Blue Origin’s spaceflight.
Of course, not everyone was critical. For instance, Mariah Carey was probably the last person on Earth to hear about the Blue Origin space flight. “She’s like, floating in the … And this is true? Wow. All right, Katy. I’m not mad at her, that’s pretty amazing,” said the diva.
