Saturday Night Live’s 50th-anniversary special became the biggest broadcast in the show’s history, but Pete Davidson had a rating for the crowd: “Terrible.”
“As you know from SNL40 – terrible audience,” Davidson said during his appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers. “It’s a terrible audience ‘cause it’s just famous people, and famous people only like themselves.”
It didn’t matter whether he stood on stage for a live bit or sat in the crowd for a pre-taped sketch, the star-studded audience was bad either way. When the audience in Meyers’ show reacted with surprise, Davidson doubled down. “It’s true! I’m guilty of this,” he admitted, joking that he didn’t care about sketches he wasn’t in.
The SNL50 broadcast brought together current cast members, original stars like Chevy Chase, and veterans like Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, and Tina Fey, among others.
The rest of the audience filled up with celebrity guests, hosts, and friends – including Sabrina Carpenter, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, and Paul Simon – who popped up on stage or got roped into the fun.
Papa Davidson
Pete Davidson also revealed the unusual fatherhood advice Eddie Murphy gave him ahead of his first child’s arrival.
He said that his co-star in the new heist comedy The Pickup told him. “‘I’ve got no advice for you because you’re on your own.’ “He was like, ‘You can’t tell anyone how to do [anything]. You’re going to do your own thing.’”
“I’m gonna be a dad. I’m stoked. I can’t wait. Let’s go. I’m so excited. I’ve never been more excited for anything.” Davidson is expecting a baby with his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt.
Before dating Davidson, Hewitt dated Benny Blanco, who is now engaged to Selena Gomez. The pair began their relationship in 2019 after Hewitt appeared in the music video for Blanco and the late Juice WRLD’s song “Graduation.”
Davidson ended his romance with Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline in 2024, just months before he began dating Hewitt. He has dated several high-profile women, including Kim Kardashian and Kate Beckinsale. He was also engaged to Ariana Grande for four months before they called it quits in 2018.
