Lebron James and his attorneys have sent multiple cease-and-desist letters to content creators responsible for disturbing deepfake videos featuring the NBA superstar. These include fabricated clips that falsely depict him as pregnant or involved in graphic, nonconsensual scenarios. The legal pressure has already led Instagram to remove several high-traffic accounts tied to the offensive material.
“The creators of an AI tool and Discord community that allowed people to generate AI videos of NBA stars say they received a cease-and-desist letter from LeBron James’ legal team,” 404 Media reported.
AI and its Dangers
The explosive growth of artificial intelligence has opened new creative possibilities-but also dangerous avenues for exploitation. LeBron now finds himself at the center of a growing controversy, as deepfake technology is increasingly used to spread offensive, false content featuring his likeness.
“High-profile creators were racking up millions of views on Instagram by making AI-generated videos of LeBron James and Steph Curry,” the outlet noted. These included deeply disturbing clips: one portraying an AI-generated James as a bystander while an AI-generated Diddy assaults Steph Curry in prison, another imagining James as a homeless man, and others showing him on his knees or falsely pregnant.
James’ legal team responded swiftly, demanding that creators stop using his face and likeness without consent. A cease-and-desist order warns of potential legal consequences if violators continue producing or distributing such content. While the action won’t erase what’s already online, it aims to stop future misuse.
Meta’s Response
Instagram has already taken down at least three accounts that shared nonconsensual AI content involving James. When 404 Media asked whether Meta had received formal legal notice from James’ attorneys, the company declined to comment. Still, its decision to begin removing the offending content suggests it’s feeling the pressure.
Despite Meta’s silence, LeBron’s legal action signals a broader fight ahead. As a global icon with a $1 billion brand to protect, he has the resources to defend himself. But many others targeted by deepfake abuse don’t have the same tools or platform.
LeBron’s move could set a precedent. As deepfake technology becomes more widespread, public figures and everyday people face increasing risks of digital exploitation.
