Miley Cyrus says she struggles to stay sober while touring and has no plans to return to the road anytime soon. In an interview on Good Morning America, the 32-year-old singer explained, “Touring makes it really hard for me to maintain sobriety, and sobriety is a key part of my stability. I couldn’t create what I do without that mindset.”
Cyrus criticized the lack of support for touring artists. “Physically, I can tour. I have the opportunities. I just don’t have the desire. I also think there’s no real infrastructure that supports artists on the road.”
She admitted that touring has taken a toll on her mental health. “It’s really hard to maintain mental wellness,” she said. In 2023, she openly declared that touring “isn’t healthy” for her.
Despite her success, Cyrus believes touring “erases” her humanity and makes it difficult for her to write music. In a TikTok video, she shared, “When every interaction becomes one between subject and observer, I lose my sense of connection and humanity. Without that, I can’t be a songwriter—and that’s my priority.”

Cyrus also reflected on her upbringing compared to her father, country music star Billy Ray Cyrus. She noted that while she grew up with financial and emotional security, her father had a far tougher start.
“My dad had the opposite experience,” she said. “I grew up on a soundstage, in a close-knit family under one roof, with stability – financial and emotional. That wasn’t the case for him.”

Miley and her dad had a close relationship, as evident in a recent podcast of the Sorry We’re Cyrus. Miley insisted she wasn’t the one smoking on the Hannah Montana set. Her mom, Tish Cyrus, had asked her to share a “core memory” from her Disney Channel days that still makes her laugh.
“Dad was smoking pot, and everyone blamed me for it,” Miley recalled, referring to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, who also played her dad on the show. “It’s hilarious. He wasn’t even sharing because you [Tish] weren’t toking yet.”
Tish admitted she didn’t believe the reports at the time and instead blamed someone else for the smell.
