Netflix Pulls The Plug On Murder Mystery The Residence After Just One Season

Netflix has canceled The Residence after just one season. Featuring Uzo Aduba as the eccentric detective Cordelia Cupp, who used her sharp intellect and obsessive bird-watching skills to solve seemingly impossible cases.

In the first – and now only – season, Cordelia investigated a murder inside the White House, ultimately solving the killing of Chief Usher A.B. Wynter, played by Giancarlo Esposito. The show’s ensemble cast also included Molly Griggs, Ken Marino, Randall Park, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Isiah Whitlock Jr, among others.

Earlier this year, series creator Paul William Davies said that he hoped to continue the story with a second season centered around Aduba’s character.

“She’s Cordelia Cupp – she’s the sun around which everything else revolves,” Davies said. “Whether the setting stays in the White House or moves elsewhere, I believe there’s more story to tell with her. I’ve got ideas, so I hope people respond to her and the show so we can continue.”

The Residence also faced unfortunate timing – it premiered just a week after Netflix debuted Adolescence, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon. The limited series dominated viewership charts and online conversation for weeks, effectively overshadowing The Residence on the platform.

    Netflix & Cancelled & Renewed

Over the past seven months, Netflix has renewed a string of newly launched scripted series, including Man on the Inside, Running Point, The Four Seasons, Beauty in Black, Forever, North of North, and most recently, Ransom Canyon and the Canadian drama Bet.

A handful of freshman shows with shaky ratings, like The Residence and No Good Deed, remained in limbo for months before the announcement of the cancellations.

The slew of Netflix scripted series renewals so far this year also include Bridgerton (for Seasons 5-6), The Diplomat (S4), The Lincoln Lawyer (S4), My Life with the Walter Boys (S3), Tires (S3), and Survival of the Thickest (S3, final season).
