Tyler, the Creator would ban podcasts if he ever became president. The two-time Grammy winner reiterated his distaste for the digital medium, saying, “We give too many people who aren’t smart and just want attention a platform to be loud and wrong – and other stupid people follow them.”
“Where are the people with real skills? We need electricians, drummers, painters, teachers. Everybody with a mic is crazy. I just think that s*it is gross,” he added in his interview with The Cut.
Despite his harsh criticism, Tyler praised two exceptions: Deante Kyle’s Grit & Eggs Podcast and Recho Omondi’s The Cutting Room Floor. “Those are two podcasts that are in the right direction,” he said.
Tyler first shared his anti-podcast stance last December. Speaking to Billboard, he joked that if he were ever elected president, his first move would be to confiscate podcast mics: “If I was president, the first thing I would do is take podcast mics away from ni**as.”
On Tours and Gatekeeping
Currently on tour promoting his latest album Chromakopia, the 34-year-old artist reflected on life on the road during a May conversation with Converse in London.
“Touring now at 34 is not as fun as it was at 20,” he admitted. “A different bed every night, unfamiliar food – I’m not from this side of the world, so figuring out where to eat every day is draining.”
Still, the performances make it worthwhile. “These shows are incredible, and the people are excited,” he added.
Elsewhere in the interview, Tyler weighed in on the idea of gatekeeping – and, unsurprisingly, he had strong opinions.
“Love gatekeeping,” he said. “Everything isn’t for everyone, and that’s OK. People need to stop expecting to be invited into everything. It’s OK not to be into something, bro. It’s cool, it’s chill.”
While he acknowledged that gatekeeping music “is a little weird,” he fully supports gatekeeping when it comes to food spots and fashion.
