Fans of The Office are finally getting more episodes. But not in the way they expected. A new show called The Paper is set in the same universe as the original sitcom. Instead of a reboot, it will be a fresh story with new characters and a new workplace.
The Office, which aired from 2005 to 2013, followed the daily lives of workers at the Dunder Mifflin paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show starred Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, and others. Since the show ended, fans have longed for a return to that world.
Now, creator Greg Daniels is answering that call, but with a twist. The Paper will use the same mockumentary style, but the story will focus on a different office setting. Daniels has said he didn’t want a reboot. He explained the idea as similar to The Mandalorian in the Star Wars universe. A connected story, not a repeat.
Office: A New Workplace, A Familiar Format
According to the official logline, the documentary crew from The Office is now looking for a new subject. They land at a dying newspaper in the Midwest. The paper is struggling to survive and is now being run by volunteers. The series will follow their efforts as the crew films everything.

NBC’s streaming service Peacock has picked up the show. It’s set to premiere in September 2025.
Fresh Cast, Familiar Universe
The new show stars Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore. Other cast members include Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and Eric Rahill. Some actors even shadowed real journalists at the Palisadian-Post to prepare for their roles.
Although most of the cast is new, one original character will return. Oscar Nuñez will reprise his role as Oscar. Steve Carell has also shown support for the project. He revealed that Gleeson called him to ask if he should take the lead role. Carell encouraged him to do it and praised his talent.
No Reboot, No Retelling
Greg Daniels made it clear this is not a reboot. He believes the original characters’ stories were wrapped up well. He said he would never try to redo the show with a different cast. To him, the original cast was lightning in a bottle. Something you can’t recreate.
While this is not The Office exactly, The Paper promises to bring the same heart, humor, and documentary-style storytelling that made the original series a classic.
