Angelina Jolie’s dad, Jon Voight, has proposed a plan to make Hollywood great again. Recently appointed by President Donald Trump as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood, 86-year-old Voight recently met with the president to discuss their plan to revitalize the U.S. film industry.
Central to this plan is the imposition of a 100% tariff on foreign-produced films. The aim is to encourage domestic production and job creation. Voight’s proposal also includes federal tax incentives, infrastructure subsidies, and job training initiatives to support the industry.
Voight stated, “…we can ensure that American production companies thrive, more jobs stay here at home, and Hollywood once again leads the world in creativity and innovation.”
Jon Voight and his manager, Steven Paul, presented a “comprehensive plan” to Trump. They outlined the changes needed to boost domestic film production as per the announcement by Paul’s company, SP Global Media.
The release made only brief mention of tariffs, which Trump said he would apply to productions produced outside the U.S. Voight’s plan involves “tariffs in certain limited circumstances,” the release stated.
Support and Concerns
While the plan has garnered support from some quarters, it has also sparked concern. In particular, the UK, where the film industry could face significant challenges due to its reliance on American projects.
Hollywood productions frequently shoot in countries like Canada, Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Hungary, Italy, and Spain. This allows various benefits, especially local tax breaks. Then other factors like skilled talent and landscapes closely resemble US settings, often at a lower cost.
President Trump has indicated that the plan is under consideration, with further discussions with industry stakeholders expected before any final decisions are made. This is one of multiple tariff plans in the Trump administration.
Trump appointed Angelina Jolie’s dad, Voight, along with Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson, as “special ambassadors” for Hollywood in January.
